Receive
The very first aspect of discipleship is to KNOW that you are a child of God. If you are unsure of this, start with surrender, on your knees and ask the Lord to forgive you of your sins and reveal Himself to you! Becoming a Christ Follower involves FIRST RECEIVING Christ as your Savior. It’s not enough to just BELIEVE in Christ or what He’s done for you, nor is it enough to have an emotional experience. Though both are valid, one does not become a disciple until he/she RECEIVES Christ into his/her life as Lord and Savior, repents from their current habitual life of sin, and turns to follow Christ, placing his/her faith in HIM and living by faith (trust) in the trustworthiness of God Himself and His Word as absolute truth. By doing this, it means that Christ becomes the one calling the shots in your life and you’ve yielded control to Him. This isn’t always easy, in fact it requires a daily surrender of our will to His, but it starts initially with a choice and that choice belongs to each one of us.
Have you already made this choice? If not, that’s where you will need to begin.
Start with a prayer similar to this:
Father, I know that I am a sinner, and that my sins have separated me from you. I am truly sorry, and now I want to repent, to turn away from my past habitual life of sin and turn towards a life following Your will and obeying Your voice. Please forgive me and give me the power of your Holy Spirit to help me turn from sin and follow after You. I believe that Your Son, Jesus Christ, died for my sins, was resurrected from the dead, is ALIVE, and hears my prayer! I invite Him to be Lord of my life, to rule and reign in my heart from this day forward. I yield my will to His. Please send your Holy Spirit to help me obey You, and to do Your will for the rest of my life. In Jesus’s name I pray, AMEN
If you just said that prayer and made the decision to put Jesus on the throne of your heart for the very first time, PLEASE TELL SOMEONE so they can rejoice with you and pray for you and your walk with the Lord! Seek out Godly counsel and fellowship and find a home church! The enemy wants to get us isolated, but the Lord doesn’t desire for us to do life alone!
